Connecticut Open House Day – Guilford
- This event has passed.
June 10, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
At 11 a.m., the free Around the Green Historic Walking Tour begins at the Guilford Information Plaza, 32 Church Street, steps from the Guilford Green.
The five historic Guilford house museums will welcome you free on Connecticut Open House Day. For lunch, there are several cafes and restaurants around the Green, where you can picnic under the trees if you prefer. And you will probably want to browse the interesting boutiques featuring fashions, books, and gifts on beautiful Whitfield, Boston, and Broad streets adjacent to the Green.
From the Green, further down Whitfield Street you will find the picturesque town marina and get a beautiful view of the iconic Grass Island Shack, subject of innumerable paintings. On your way, you will pass the Henry Whitfield State Museum, the oldest stone house in New England. Stop there to learn about Guilford’s founder and his followers, who came together from England in 1639 and, while on their ship, pledged to remain loyal to their group, helping each other and the community whenever needed. Their covenant is inscribed on a granite block at the corner of Whitfield and Old Whitfield streets.
