Galleries in Motion 2018: NeoClassic/Romantic Painting Jan. 23
Art Slide Lecture Series with Joy Pepe

Guilford Free Library and Scranton Library, Madison, announce the 36th annual Galleries in Motion, beginning at 2 pm on Tuesday, January 23 at the Guilford Free Library. Joy Pepe, Professor Emeritus, Lyme College of Art, who now teaches at University of Hartford & Central Connecticut State University, leads this popular visual lecture that takes place twice in Guilford and twice in Madison.

Neoclassicism and Romanticism have nearly parallel origins in the eighteenth century in both England and France, and elements of both approaches coexist in the other. This series of talks will explore this cultural phenomenon with two English and two French painters.

Rooted in the culture of ancient Greece and Rome, as well as in the idealism of Renaissance art, the “new classicism” represented the Enlightenment principles of logic, morality and empiricism, while early Romanticism relished emotionalism, exoticism, and the frightening. We will consider how four artists merged the boundaries of the two styles to forge powerful images of ancient history, contemporary politics, science and technology, nature, and animal and human form.

No registration necessary. Free and open to all. Refreshments served.
