Letters from the Battlefield with Rick Maynard at Guilford Free Library

With the 100-year anniversary of the entry of the United States into WWI, there is a rising interest in the “war to end all wars.” A documentary film, “Never Forgotten” created by the American Battlefield Monuments Commission features letters written home from the front lines of France from Paul Maynard, grand uncle of Guilford Parks and Recreation Director Rick Maynard. Rick and his sister found over 30 letters in their father’s basement and realized they are a treasure. Many of the letters are descriptive of the fierce battles that our soldiers faced.
In the presentation, Rick will show the 24-minute film and discuss how he found the letters, how the letters led him to meet two cousins he never knew, how the letters led to the film creation, and what he learned about the character of the man who was killed on the last day of the war.
