Writing Injustice Virtual Book Discussion “Parable of the Talents” by Octavia Butler

Through literature, film, and other media, the Writing Injustice Book Group invites the Guilford community to explore the issues of race and inequality that shape our history and our world.

talentsConversations will be led and facilitated by Hazel V. Carby, the Charles C. and Dorathea S. Dilley Professor Emeritus of African American Studies and Professor Emeritus of American Studies at Yale University, and Donna Daniels, Ph.D., Vice President, Heron Foundation and Cultural Anthropologist.

We return to Octavia Butler’s prescient two-part Parable series about the inequalities, injustices, and persecutions that characterize a USA beset by environmental and ecological catastrophe, political demagoguery, and religious fanaticism. Parable of the Talents is the second book in the series. Set in 2032 when the oppression of women is brutal, and forms of servitude and enslavement have returned, Presidential candidate, Andrew Steele Jarret, a Texas senator and religious zealot is running on a platform to “make America great again.”
For those who would like to attend but missed the previous discussion, please catch up by reading Parable of the Sower, set a decade earlier in a volatile and violent world of gated communities, rampant homelessness, fires, lack of water, and authoritarian governance.

Registration is required. To register, go to https://www.guilfordfreelibrary.org/category/events, click this event and complete the form. You will receive an email with a link to join the program on Zoom.
